Making Salt

Plan a valid experiment to produce Copper Chloride salt. [Required Practical]

[6 marks]

  • To form a salt (like Copper Chloride), react:

Metal carbonate/ Metal oxide/ Metal hydroxide

    • Use Copper Carbonate

    with Acid

    • Use Hydrochloric Acid

Reactants Hydrochloric Acid and Copper Carbonate powder to produce Copper Chloride salt.
    • Warm the acid

    • Add Copper Carbonate powder in excess

    • Stir

    • Stop adding when fizzing stops

Reaction when Hydrochloric acid is warmed and excess Copper Carbonate is added to it and stirred until fizzing stops.
  • Filter it

Filtration of excess (powder residue) of Copper Carbonate from the produced Copper Chloride.
    • Heat it in an evaporating dish above a hot water bath

    • Leave it to crystallise and cool

Evaporation of Copper Chloride solution by heating in an evaporating dish on top of hot water bath.
Crystallisation of Copper Chloride by patting dry and letting it cool.
